This position performs a variety of duties aimed at assisting the participants to develop vocational art skills and meet goals outlined on the Person-Centered Plan. This furthers their growth towards independence and fully assimilates the participants into active participation in the communities where they live and work.


This is a day support position, working with participants with one or more developmental disabilities or intellectual challenges. Arts Counselors plan curriculum and instruct participants in the arts, such as painting, sketching, designing, photography, sculpturing, and other art mediums. The Arts Counselor creates a supportive environment assisting the participants with habilitative goals, personal care goals, and performing tasks associated with daily living, communication and socialization outlined in the Person Centered Plan. The counselor documents participant care provided. This position reports to the Manager of each Arts Program under the supervision of the Manager of the Arts Programs.

 Assists with preparation and implementation of lesson plans and course goals.
 Researches current market trends in art markets in and around the program center.
 Develops and implements art projects.
 Staffs after hours events on occasion as needed.
 Assists program manager and UMAR support staff in development of promotional materials.
 Teaches art techniques to participants with disabilities using adaptive methods and tools.
 Observes and evaluates participants’ work to determine level of progress or plans for improvement.
 Plans community visits to museums, galleries, or other venues appropriate to initiating and complementing in-class instruction and accompanies participants on field trips.
 Seeks participant opportunity to enter art contests or shows, prepares artwork/entry forms as needed.
 Plans art exhibitions and implements installation, sale, and removal of artwork.
 Reviews and provides input into the development of the participants’ Person-Centered Plan.
 Educates and assists the participants in developing skills necessary for the achievement of educational, vocational, recreational/leisure, religious and financial goals.
 Supports participants through active listening, positive and supportive communication.
 Administers medications or supervises participants that self-administer medications, including proper storage and documentation of medications administered.
 Daily documentation as needed.
 Provides transportation to scheduled activities and/or vocational settings.
 Maintains cleanliness of art center vehicles including refueling when gas level is at 1/4 tank.
 Intervenes in a crisis and notifies Program Manager for assistance.
 Maintains the arts site(s) in a presentable manner at all times.
 Accurately records hours worked on a daily basis.
 Attends staff meetings and participate in participant house meetings as requested.
 Performs duties required to maintain participants in a safe, hygienic, and supportive environment, including assisting participants with toileting needs and personal cleanliness.
 Perform all other duties as requested by supervisor


Knowledge of intellectual/developmental disabilities, sensitivity in dealing with program participants and their families/guardians, excellent interpersonal skills, initiative, sound judgment, ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with other employees, good oral and written communication skills.
 Knowledge of assessment, MH/IDD laws, rules and regulations.

 Knowledge in one or more areas of art: visual, performing, holistic, culinary, horticultural, fabric arts, artful crafts, etc., and knowledge of teaching techniques.
 Understanding the principals of Teaching for Artistic Behavior.


 High School Diploma or equivalent, College degree in the arts preferred.
 Staff must meet client specific competencies as identified by the individual’s person-centered planning team and documented in the Person Centered Plan.
 Arts Counselors providing service must be supervised by a Qualified Professional. Supervision must be provided according to supervision requirement specified in 10A NCAC 27G. 0204, and according to licensure or certification requirements of the appropriate discipline.
 Must have a criminal record check and a healthcare registry check as required in accordance with 10A NCAC 27G.0200.
 If providing transportation must have a North Carolina or other valid driver’s license, a safe driving record and an acceptable level of automobile liability insurance.
 Must be capable of passing a pre-employment drug screen.
 Successful completion of Training and Skills and refresher training as mandated to include: First Aid and CPR, Medication Administration, NCI +, Blood Borne Pathogens and Infectious Disease, HIPAA, Defensive Driving, Core Competencies, Organizational Overview, Health and Safety, General Organizational Orientation. Training to meet the MH/DD/SA needs of the clients as specified in the treatment/habilitation plan.
