UMAR Timeline

Founded in 1983, UMAR’s mission is to promote community inclusion, independence and growth for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through residential, employment and cultural enrichment opportunities.

UMAR is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and an agency and ministry of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. Our 23 group homes and 6 apartments allow individuals to experience independent living in a home-like atmosphere.

UMAR currently serves over 350 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout Western North Carolina.

What is a Developmental Disability?

Group Homes

 

Developmental Disability (DD) is a severe, chronic disability that is manifested before the age of 22 which significantly limits intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior.

UMAR's program services include group supported employment, an ARTS program, recreation activities, personal growth goals, advocacy, Developmental Therapies Services and CAP services (Community Alternatives Program) in a parent/guardian’s home or the client’s own home.
